How to prepare for the ICAO Level 6 exam with MentalAviators®


Booking the training


If you want to prepare specifically for the ICAO Level 6 exam and feel that you are already very close to Level 6 in terms of content, you can book a special Level 6 training course with MentalAviators®. After booking, you will receive access to our online calendar, where you can select your preferred date for a training session.

You decide whether the training takes place on site at your location or online via Zoom. The content and intensity are identical—we adapt to your flying reality and your everyday life.

Confirmation and preparation


After booking your appointment, we will send you a confirmation email with all further information. This will include tips on how to prepare optimally so that you can get the most out of your training session.

We typically ask you to send us some brief information in advance, such as your current ICAO level, your flight experience, and your goal (e.g., upgrading from level 5 to 6 or attempting level 6 for the first time). If you already have an existing language certificate or old exam transcripts, you can also send these to us in advance. This allows us to tailor the training precisely to your level.


Training procedure (Part 1 – Structured tasks)


At the agreed time, your trainer will welcome you to the Zoom meeting or in person on site. It is worth logging in at least five minutes early to quickly check that your camera, microphone, and headset are working properly—just as you would in a real exam situation.

In the first part, we work with typical building blocks from a Level 6-oriented language exam, including:

– Structured questions about your flight training, your assignments, complex flight situations, unusual occurrences, and decision-making processes
– Detailed image descriptions with a focus on clarity, precision, and spontaneous language production
– Challenging radio and communication situations in which we use both plain English and language close to phrasology
– Where applicable, listening comprehension tasks (e.g., ATIS, radio recordings, unclear transmissions) in which we focus less on the “correct” answer and more on your linguistic skills, your ability to paraphrase, and your ability to clarify.

You will receive direct feedback on vocabulary, grammatical subtleties, pronunciation, idioms, and—most importantly—how “natural” and fluent you sound. Level 6 relies heavily on you speaking not only correctly, but also confidently, spontaneously, and with nuance.


Training procedure (Part 2 – Free Level 6 conversation)


The second part consists of a free conversation in English lasting about 20 minutes. Here we simulate the part of the exam where you talk to the examiner without a rigid structure.

The topics are deliberately kept open, but remain aviation-related or at least based on your professional reality.
We talk about crew coordination, stressful situations, critical incidents, safety culture, human factors, and your personal view of flying, for example.

This section focuses on how to argue, explain, put things into perspective, give examples, and clearly structure even complex thoughts spontaneously.
We look at whether you can use finer linguistic nuances, such as politely disagreeing, expressing uncertainty, discussing hypothetical scenarios, or incorporating cultural aspects. This is precisely the area where Level 6 differs from Level 5.


Focus of Level 6 training


Our training does not replace the official ICAO language test, but prepares you specifically for it. The focus is on the “last few percent” that can make the difference between level 5 and 6.

This includes, for example:

– your active vocabulary for more complex aviation and human situations
– Precise yet natural expression without “textbook English”
– Clear, but not exaggerated pronunciation that is easily understood internationally
– Speak fluently, even if you need to think or are asked unexpected questions.
– Dealing with misunderstandings, disruptions, and inquiries

If you wish, we can specifically practice situations that you find particularly challenging—such as spontaneous questions, “trick questions,” unfamiliar topics, or the feeling of speaking in a reserved manner in an exam situation, thereby performing below your actual level.


Evaluation, feedback, and next steps


At the end of the session, you will receive an honest assessment of how realistic we think a Level 6 attempt is and what you should work on before the actual exam. We will summarize the most important points and give you specific tips on how you can continue training on your own, for example with certain exercise formats, routines, or focus topics.

If necessary, you can book additional training sessions to work on specific weak points or simulate a complete “Level 6 run-through” shortly before your exam. The goal is for you to know exactly what to expect, how you sound, and to go into your actual ICAO Level 6 exam feeling realistic and well prepared.

FAQs about the ICAO language proficiency test

At MentalAviators, you can basically take any ICAO language level up to Level 6 achieve. We therefore certify your language proficiency according to your performance – up to a maximum of ICAO Level 6.

The official list of the Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) only includes examiners and language examination centers that are directly supervised by the German LBA. MentalAviators® However, it falls under the supervision of the Austrian Austro Control GmbH in Vienna. Nevertheless, our examinations are fully recognized by the LBA and the local aviation authorities in Germany.

No. With our testing procedure, you do not have to commit to a specific target level in advance. You simply take the language test as normal, and at the end we will certify you at the exact ICAO level that corresponds to your actual language proficiency (i.e., level 4, 5, or 6). It is not so that the exam counts as a “fail” just because you may not have reached your target level – unless, of course, the result Level 3 or below (in which case the exam is actually considered failed).

• Prüfungsbeginn: Zum vereinbarten Termin kontaktiert dich dein Sprachprüfer per Skype oder Zoom. Zunächst werden einige persönliche Daten in unser System eingegeben, und es wird ein Screenshot von dir zusammen mit deinem Personalausweis gemacht, um deine Identität zu bestätigen. Anschließend gibt dir der Prüfer letzte Hinweise zum Ablauf, und du kannst noch offene Fragen klären. Dann beginnt die Prüfung.

• Fragenrunde: Zuerst werden dir 18 zufällig ausgewählte Fragen vom Computer vorgelesen, auf die du frei antwortest. Diese Fragen haben alle einen Bezug zur Luftfahrt (es sind keine technischen Fachfragen).

• Anpassung an Erfahrung: Die konkreten Fragen sind an deinen persönlichen fliegerischen Hintergrund angepasst. Das heißt, wenn du z.B. noch Flugschüler in der Ausbildung bist, bekommst du andere Fragen gestellt als etwa ein Inhaber einer Privatpilotenlizenz (PPL). Und Berufspiloten mit CPL- oder ATPL-Lizenz erwarten wiederum etwas andere Fragen – jeweils zugeschnitten auf den Bereich (Allgemeine Luftfahrt oder kommerzielle Fliegerei), in dem du dich bewegst und über den du am besten sprechen kannst.

• Aufgaben im ersten Teil: Unabhängig von deinem Hintergrund musst du im ersten Teil der Prüfung unter anderem zweimal ein Bild beschreiben, Wörter nach dem NATO-Alphabet buchstabieren und allgemeine Fragen zu deiner Person und deinem Bezug zur Fliegerei beantworten.

• ATIS & Hörverständnis: Sofern du nicht Flugschüler bist oder nicht gerade die reine Level-4-Prüfung absolvierst, kommen zusätzlich noch zwei ATIS-Interpretationen (du hörst zwei aufgezeichnete ATIS-Meldungen und gibst ihren Inhalt in Englisch wieder) sowie zwei Aufgaben zur Hörverständnis (Listening Comprehension). Bei Letzteren sollst du entweder einen Funkspruch aus der kommerziellen Fliegerei oder ein kurzes Gespräch zwischen zwei Piloten sinngemäß wiedergeben.

• Fragenanzahl je nach Profil: Für Flugschüler werden insgesamt nur 16 Fragen gestellt, und bei reinen Level-4-Prüfungen sind es sogar nur 12 Fragen im ersten Teil.

• Freies Gespräch: Im Anschluss an die Fragen folgt ein ca. 15-minütiges freies Gespräch mit dem Prüfer. Dabei gibt es keine festgelegten Themen – das Gespräch richtet sich nach deinen Interessen und Erfahrungen. (Bei der Level-4-only Prüfung dauert dieses Gespräch nur etwa 10 Minuten.)

• Bewertung durch zwei Prüfer: Nach Ende der Prüfung wird deine Leistung vom Prüfer bewertet, und die Aufzeichnung wird anschließend an einen Zweitprüfer (Language Proficiency Examiner, LPLE) weitergeleitet. Dieser nimmt ebenfalls eine Bewertung vor und legt den final erzielten ICAO-Level fest.

• Zertifikat: 1–2 Werktage nach der Prüfung erhältst du dein ICAO-Sprachzertifikat per E-Mail (oft sogar schneller).

Keine Sorge – außer du erreichst nur Level 3 oder darunter, gilt die Prüfung nicht einfach als „nicht bestanden“. In der Praxis wird dir dann vielmehr der Level bescheinigt, der deinem tatsächlichen Sprachniveau entspricht. Ein Beispiel: Du hoffst vielleicht auf ein Level 6 und erreichst letztlich nicht ganz diese Anforderungen. Die Prüfung ist damit aber keineswegs wertlos und muss nicht wiederholt werden. Stattdessen stellen wir dir ein Zertifikat über den entsprechenden niedrigeren Level aus (z.B. Level 5, falls Level 6 nicht erreicht wurde). Nur wenn du unter Level 4 bleibst (Level 3 oder tiefer), gilt die Prüfung als nicht bestanden und du müsstest sie wiederholen.

Ja, selbstverständlich kannst du deine allererste ICAO Sprachprüfung bei MentalAviators ablegen – jederzeit gern. Die Prüfung läuft für Erstteilnehmer genauso ab wie für alle anderen; es gibt hier keinen Unterschied.

Ja, das ist überhaupt kein Problem. Auch wenn dein Spracheintrag in der Pilotenlizenz bereits abgelaufen ist, kannst du die ICAO Sprachprüfung bei uns absolvieren. Du musst anschließend lediglich bei deiner zuständigen Behörde einen neuen Spracheintrag in deine Lizenz beantragen (mit dem Zertifikat, das du von uns erhältst).

Ja. Du kannst bereits bis zu 90 Tage vor Ablauf deines aktuellen Spracheintrags eine neue Sprachprüfung ablegen, um den Eintrag zu verlängern. Dein neuer 4- bzw. 6-Jahreszeitraum (je nach erreichtem Level) schließt dann nahtlos an die bisherige Gültigkeit an.

Für Fluglotsen (Air Traffic Controller) wird die ICAO Sprachprüfung nach FCL.055 leider not anerkannt. Allerdings hat das Bundesaufsichtsamt für Flugsicherung (BAF) mit Schreiben vom 02.02.2021 mitgeteilt, dass bis auf Weiteres auch nach FCL.055 durchgeführte Sprachprüfungen für AFISOs (Flugplatz-Informationslotsen) anerkannt werden. (Siehe hierzu das offizielle BAF-Schreiben vom 02.02.2021 im PDF-Format.) Wir empfehlen dennoch dringend, vorab eigenständig bei deiner zuständigen Stelle nachzufragen, ob eine bei MentalAviators® abgelegte FCL.055-Sprachprüfung aktuell für deinen Zweck anerkannt wird.

Ja. Seit dem 11.11.2019 ist die Verordnung (EU) 2019/1747 in Kraft. Darin ist in FCL.055(e) eine generelle Anerkennung von Sprachprüfungen geregelt, die nach dem Verfahren eines anderen Mitgliedstaates durchgeführt wurden. (Originalwortlaut: “The demonstration of language proficiency … shall be done through a method of assessment established by any competent authority.”) Die in einem anderen EU-Staat abgelegte ICAO Sprachprüfung (z.B. über MentalAviators®) wird also in Deutschland anerkannt und kann beim LBA bzw. deinem zuständigen Luftfahrtamt eingereicht werden.

Ja. Die oben genannte EU-Verordnung 2019/1747 gilt seit dem 11.11.2019 im Prinzip auch EASA-weit – und somit ebenso für die Schweiz. Gemäß FCL.055(e) sind unsere Sprachprüfungen also grundsätzlich anerkannt (“The demonstration of language proficiency … shall be done through a method of assessment established by any competent authority.”). Zusätzlich hat das Schweizer Bundesamt für Zivilluftfahrt (BAZL) am 1. Juli 2020 offiziell bestätigt, dass unsere Prüfungen bis ICAO Level 6 anerkannt werden.

Ja. Die Prüfungsabwicklung erfolgt offiziell über Language Testing Body 110 (LTB 110), welcher in Österreich ansässig ist und von Austro Control zertifiziert wurde. Unsere ICAO Sprachprüfung ist damit in Österreich selbstverständlich voll anerkannt.

Grundsätzlich ja – seit dem 11.11.2019 regelt FCL.055(e) der EU-Verordnung 2019/1747 die generelle Anerkennung von Sprachkompetenzprüfungen, die nach dem Verfahren eines beliebigen EASA-Mitgliedstaates durchgeführt wurden (“The demonstration of language proficiency … shall be done through a method of assessment established by any competent authority.”). In der Praxis solltest du aber unbedingt vorab bei deiner nationalen Luftfahrtbehörde nachfragen. Einige EASA-Staaten haben diese Regelung (bekannt als Opinion 5) noch nicht vollständig in nationales Recht umgesetzt. Daher kann es sein, dass in einzelnen Ländern trotz der gesetzlichen Bestimmung noch Einschränkungen bestehen.
