EASA.CAT.GEN.MPA.175(b) – What does the new EASA regulation on the psychological assessment of pilots mean for airlines?

Since 14 February 2021, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulation EASA.CAT.GEN.MPA.175 requires airlines to ensure that all pilots undergo a psychometric assessment within 24 months of their recruitment and before starting scheduled flight operations. This assessment must be carried out under the supervision of a psychologist with at least three years of experience in aviation and specialised in psychological assessments. The regulation specifies which aspects must be tested, how long the tests should last and who must be involved.

What does EASA.CAT.GEN.MPA.175(b) imply for pilot recruitment processes?

As part of their recruitment procedures, airlines and commercial air operators are required to carry out psychological assessments for pilots in accordance with EASA.CAT.GEN.MPA.175(b). They must document the procedures used, the personnel involved, the assessment criteria and tools and establish their period of validity.

The psychological assessment must cover at least four main criteria defined by EASA. These include (i) cognitive abilities, (ii) personality traits, (iii) operational and professional competencies and (iv) interpersonal skills in accordance with the principles of Crew Resource Management. The IATA guidance material and best practices on pilot aptitude testing provide five dimensions of measurement that can be used as a basis.
